I've played old time string band music for most of my life, and "Good Old Boys" is what we were trying to do. I don't like the "Billy the Kid" cut, but the rest of it is stellar. I'll go along with "Aero-Plain" and "Morning Bugle" as two don't-miss-it greats.įrom his later works I like "Good Old Boys". His output was was quite prolific, there are many, many recordings to chose from.Ĭould anyone here recommend their favorites (other than the two recordings I already own)? I sense Hartford was a musician's musician, not necessarily the "hottest" player around but with a true sense of what music is about, how music should be accomplished and the purpose music should serve. What I'm most blown away is the sense of joy that Hartford and his bandmates (Blake, Clements, Taylor, Scruggs) are able to get across. ![]() Music as it should be, technically proficient (an understatement or what), eclectic and innovative. ![]() On a whim, I bought the Steam Powered Aeroplane CD two weeks ago and I just can't stop playing it! I swear, this is one of the top 10 recordings EVER. But have never really immersed myself in his music. ![]() I've know about John Hartford for a long time, seen him and listened to him casually for years, bought the Mark Twang CD many years ago and enjoyed it immensely.
